SUMMARY:Climate Conversations: Tipping Points (Online Event)
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, March 30\, 2023 \nTime 3:00 PM to 4:15 PM ET \nAbout the event: \nA conversation about how to prepare for the consequences of abrupt changes in human and natural systems and how to encourage positive social tipping points. \nWith continued climate change\, elements of the Earth system may reach tipping points of abrupt\, dramatic change with irreversible consequences\, like the rapid collapse of ice sheets or dieback of the Amazon rainforest. Tipping points also exist in human systems; devastation from extreme weather and major stresses on food\, energy\, and water could accumulate and tilt society into radically new dynamics\, such as mass migration or major economic shifts. However\, tipping points in human systems can also be positive and stem from rapidly spreading norms\, behaviors\, and technologies\, such as how battery storage could tip the power sector irreversibly towards renewable energy. Join us for a conversation about the tipping points we are approaching\, how to prepare for those we may reach\, and how to encourage positive social tipping points for action on climate change. \nThe conversation will be webcast on the Climate Conversations: Tipping Points webpage on Thursday\, March 30\, 2023\, from 3-4:15 PM ET. Closed captioning will be provided. The conversation will include questions from the audience and be recorded and available to view on the page after the event. \nClimate Conversations: Pathways to Action is a monthly webinar series from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine that aims to convene high-level\, cross-cutting\, nonpartisan conversations about issues relevant to policy action on climate change. \nParticipant Bios \nLaurie Goering is a journalist and the climate change editor for Context\, the award-winning Thomson Reuters Foundation’s daily news website. She has written on climate change for over two decades and previously worked as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune based in New Delhi\, Kuwait\, Johannesburg\, Rio de Janeiro\, Havana\, Mexico City\, and London. \nRachael Shwom is a Professor in the Department of Human Ecology at Rutgers University and Acting Director of the Rutgers Energy Institute. She conducts research that links sociology\, psychology\, engineering\, economics\, and public policy to investigate how social and political factors influence society’s responses to energy and climate problems. \nIlona M. Otto holds the Professorship in Societal Impacts of Climate Change at the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change\, University of Graz\, Austria. She leads a research group that analyzes the social dynamic processes and interventions likely to spark the rapid social changes necessary to radically transform the interactions of human societies with nature and ecosystem services in the next 30 years. \nContact: \nRob Greenway. SUMMARY:Developing climate resilient transport: A Research Knowledge Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Research Knowledge Exchange showcases their latest research on building transport systems that are greener\, more efficient\, safer\, and climate change resilient on 29th of March 2022 at 13:00 GMT. \n“Transport infrastructures build economies and communities – they get people and goods to where they need to be\, including accessing schools\, markets and health services. We need to increase our connectivity and continue to grow infrastructures\, particularly in low-income countries (LICs)\, but how can this be delivered given the multifaceted challenges of climate change? “ \n“Transport enables development\, but it also causes pollution\, traffic congestion\, road accidents and is a huge contributor to CO2 emissions. Climate change leads to extreme weather events\, which can result in major damage to infrastructures\, putting a huge strain on the already stretched transport systems in LICs.” \n“This free\, online webinar will explore ways we can build transport systems that are cleaner\, safer\, more efficient and better adapted to shifts in weather patterns.” \nSpeakers:  \nDr. Andrew Quinn\, Reader in Atmospheric Science and Engineering at the University of Birmingham.\nPresenting highlights from the soon-to-be-published Climate-Resilient Transport: A policy guide provides systematic guidance on how to scope\, develop\, and implement climate change adaptation plans for transport infrastructure in LICs in Africa and South Asia. \nTim Durant\, Associate Director at Vectos\nPresenting findings from the TRANSitions project aims to help transition the policy debate\, stakeholder relations and informal transport services for a low carbon future. \nPlease note daylight saving clock changes in March in some regions mean the event takes place at 13.00 GMT; 14.00 BST; 09.00 EST. \nCLICK this link to Register➔ Developing climate resilient transport: A Research Knowledge Exchange

SUMMARY:3rd CRISPS Webinar: Epoxy Modified Bitumen - Performance from Laboratory Test\, Trials and Applications to Date
DESCRIPTION:The International Road Federation\, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham (UoB)\, the University of Auckland (UoA) and the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)\, is pleased to present the 3rd CRISPS Webinar on “Epoxy Modified Bitumen – Performance from Laboratory Test\, Trials and Applications to Date.” \nThis research investigates the feasibility of using Modified Epoxy bitumen in Porous Asphalt (MEAC) and Chip Seals (MECS) which addresses climate-related issues with conventional bitumen in asphalt and chip seal. This technology can be used to build unbound granular pavements (locally built with as much or as little labour as desired) with MECS and MEAC\, which would produce a long-life pavement with little need for maintenance.  It would also need low investment in machinery. Initial research outcomes suggested these surfaces have the potential to last more than 40 years. \nJoin us on 14 December 2021 from 8:00 to 9:00 am CET to hear more about the early findings from the “Climate-resilient sustainable road pavement surfacing (CRISPS)” project. \nSpeaking for You: \n\nDr Theuns F.P Henning\, Senior Lecturer\, University of Auckland. Dr Henning also leads the team at Climate Adaptation Platform.\nDavid Alabaster\, Principal Pavements Engineer\, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency\n\nClick this link for further details and register for the 3rd CRISPS webinar. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: CRISPS Project – Climate Resilient Sustainable Road Pavement Surfacing
DESCRIPTION:One or several simultaneous changes in climate\, e.g. hotter seasons\, more extreme precipitation events and sea-level rise could severely impinge on the road performance in Low-Income Countries (LICs). \nFailure to account for such impacts in future road design\, maintenance and operating planning and protocols\, could cause accelerated road deterioration and higher road use costs\, thereby severely constraining socio-economic development. \nTo address this\, the CRISPS multi-disciplinary research project will operate over 18 months under the leadership of the University of Birmingham (UoB) and in collaboration with the University of Auckland (UoA)\, the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and the International Road Federation (IRF). \nThe research project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic suitability of three global best-practice road surfacing technologies for the range of traffic and environmental conditions of high volume roads that typically currently occur in LICs and those that are predicted to occur in the future.  The technologies evaluated are Modified Epoxy Chip Seals (MECS)\, Modified Epoxy Asphalt Surfaces (MEAS) and Fibre Mastic Asphalt (FMA) respectively. The technologies are a result of many years of research in New Zealand (MECS and MEAS) and Malaysia (FMA) where their in-situ performance has been demonstrated through trials and they are as a result routinely used in service. \nThis webinar will provide you with an overview of the project and there will be time for questions at the end of the session. \nAGENDA \n\nOpening & introductory remarks                     Dr Michael Burrow (UoB)\nThe HVT programme                                        Mr Bernard Obika (IMC Worldwide)\nOverview of the CRISPS project                        Dr Michael Burrow (UoB)\nData and deterioration modelling                    Dr Theuns Henning (UoA)\nField trials and implementation                        Dr Gurmel Ghataora (UoB)\nDissemination and Uptake                                Ms Susanna Zammataro (IRF)\n\n \n  \nTo participate\, please CLICK on the button below to register: \n CLICK TO REGISTER\n

SUMMARY:SEA LEVEL LAW: Case studies on council liabilities for sea-level rise
DESCRIPTION:Constant Change Seminar Series\nOne of the key trends in domestic and international climate litigation is in trying to establish who is liable for taking (or not taking) adaptation measures. \nThere have been at least 19 court challenges in Aotearoa to council decisions on adaptation to sea-level rise. Currently\, councils have a lot of leeway in their approaches to climate hazard risks\, including sea-level rise. Court action across the nation is testing the limits of council authority\, and showing up gaps in the legislative and policy environment. \nAnd even though leeway exists for councils\, some of their options will incur larger future liability costs than others. Further\, some councils –  at least some of those involved in making adaptation decisions – appear to be unaware of the extent of their possible liability. \nIn this seminar\, Catherine Iorns (Victoria University of Wellington) will take you through one aspect of her broad-ranging research into “Sea level rise\, housing and insurance: Liability and compensation”. \nREGISTER\n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nCatherine Iorns is a Professor of Law at Victoria University of Wellington. Her research interests focus on Environmental Law and Management while also covering Indigenous Rights and Statutory Interpretation. Her current research covers a range of topics including climate adaptation laws\, freshwater\, deep seabed mining\, Māori environmental justice\, and responsibility frameworks for nature. She is also involved in the current appeal of the Draft Water Conservation Order for Te Waikoropupū Springs. \nThis seminar is part of the Constant Change seminar series of The Deep South\, National Science Challenges. The organization hopes to keep climate change at the forefront of planning and investment in this time of the pandemic. Please join this online seminar series from your home or office. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Should I Stay or Should I Go now?
DESCRIPTION:The webinar highlights the importance of communication to prevent disasters and how effective communications can the impacts of disasters. \nIn this digital age where we get access to information and warnings instantaneously\, and as it unfolds\, sometimes these warnings can still fail to produce the necessary actions from the intended audience. Why is this so? \nFor example\, the Covid-19 pandemic and all types of disasters\, early warning systems are only useful when it is communicated clearly and timely to communities that are at risk. As a result\, the target audience knows what actions to take and what decisions to make. \nAccording to the organisers of this webinar\, “Different government responses towards COVID-19 demonstrate that communicating risk\, clarity of roles and information\, and the inclusion of the full range of multi-disciplinary experts who understand people’s behavioural drivers in a crisis and their social settings is critical in designing and implementing effective risk communication frameworks.” \nThe webinar features the following speakers: \n\nFormer New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark\nBapon Fakhruddin\, PhD Technical Director of DRR and Climate Resilience\, Tonkin & Taylor\nLisa Robinson\, Head of Advisory\, BBC Media Action\nLoretta Hieber-Girardet\, Chief of Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific UN Office for DRR\n\nFor more information about the webinar and to register\, click the link below: \nSHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO NOW? \n

SUMMARY:Climate Risk Week 2020 - A Virtual Event by The Economist Magazine
DESCRIPTION:Measuring\, managing and mitigating the threat from climate change\nA 5-day Virtual Event hosted by The Economist Magazine. The Climate Risk Insight Hour webinar will launch this event. \nThe Economist’s Climate Risk Week will take place from October 12th – 16th and will convene business leaders\, investors\, academics\, and policymakers to discuss the physical and transition risks posed by climate change. \nOverview\nClimate change will reshape every aspect of the global economy\, from politics to migration\, financing to supply chains. Markets are demanding greater transparency on the climate risks that firms face. So\, too\, are regulators: in 2019 the Bank of England announced plans for climate stress tests for banks. Such demands will only increase. \nOver five days\, The Economist will ask what role governments and central banks should play in embedding climate-change data into financial decision-making. How can companies overcome the first-mover disadvantage associated with publishing their risk exposures? Does technology reinvent the rules of risk management? And how can the public and private sectors work together to combat what has become the greatest risk of all? \nSome of the topics that will be covered:\n\nThe big restart: lessons in resilience\nClimate Risk and the view from global investors\nThe road to COP26\nClimate risk and investors\, insurance and banking.\n\nFor more information and registration\, visit the website.\nRegistration and Pricing \nWeek Pass – Earlybird Rate – Expires July 17th >> £299 (ex.VAT) (saving 25% off the standard rate)\nDay Pass – Earlybird Rate – Expires July 17th >> £149 (ex.VAT) (saving 25% off the standard price) \nNew for 2020 \nAfter the success of its inaugural summit in 2019\, Climate Risk Week will feature critical global insights from industry leaders on how to better measure\, manage\, mitigate and report climate-related risks. \nThe program will explore the unique opportunity which the pandemic has provided to governments and businesses to speed up the transition to a low carbon economy. We explore the role of climate-related data and the new road to COP26. \nNote: All the registered attendees are eligible for CPD attendance certificate\, which will be issued after the event. Please contact The Economist’s customer services team for a certificate request. \n

SUMMARY:Sustainability Week 2020 Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:10 hours of curated content over 5 days. \nThe event is the industries’ response to the current global climate crises highlighted during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos in January 2020. \n“From scorched landscapes to melting ice caps and polluted oceans\, the impacts of climate change are clear and immediate. Yet despite the warning signs\, progress to limit global warming remains slow and inadequate. Now\, as the world grapples with the disruption of COVID-19—a crisis that at once threatens climate action and reinforces the need for collective efforts—businesses and governments realise that they can’t simply return to normal. But can this disruption spur affirmative action? \nThe Economist’s Sustainability Week will bring together industry leaders\, policymakers\, entrepreneurs and researchers to assess what businesses in particular—but also governments and NGOs—can do to rise to the challenge. How can solutions be scaled up to meet internationally agreed goals? Can the disruption of COVID-19 accelerate progress? How can we scale solutions\, alter behaviours and collaborate better?” \nThis event is an opportunity to hear from leading voices on the issue of sustainability\, without increasing your carbon footprint. \nFeaturing the following speakers:\n\nAlan Jope\, Unilever\, Chief Executive\nDouglas Lamont\, Innocent Drinks\, CE\nAngel Gurria\, OECD\, Secretary-General\nVirginie Helias\, Procter & Gamble\, Chief sustainability officer\nHoesung Lee\, IPCC\, Chair\nGail Bradbrook\, Extinction Rebellion\, Co-founder\nVanessa Wright\, Pernod Ricard\, Group VP\, sustainability and responsibility\nAnn Tracy\, Colgate-Palmolive\, Chief sustainability officer\nand many others.\n\nTo register\, click this link ⇒ SUSTAINABILITY WEEK 2020 \nApplications to attend the roundtable are subject to approval by The Economist Events. \nWho should attend?\n\nSenior sustainability and CSR professionals – all industries\nImpact investors / responsible investors\nCharities and organisations with interest in sustainability issues\nSustainability academics\, e.g. researchers and professors\nGovernment bodies/departments who focus on the environment\n\nFor further information on this virtual event\, click this website.
