The University of Auckland reports that it got 6th place in The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings among 1,406 universities from 106 countries/regions, improving its 9th place in the 2021 ranking.
According to The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings website, it is the only global performance table assessing universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The rankings “use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching”.
The University news says, “The global University Impact Rankings measure how universities worldwide are working towards the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include quality education, good health and well-being, and gender equality. Retaining a position in the top ten reaffirms the University’s strong commitment to the SDGs, many of which align with the University’s strategic plan, Taumata Teitei.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dawn Freshwater, said this is an outstanding accomplishment, particularly given the increasing importance being placed on the measures by organisations worldwide.
“Improving our position in the top ten reaffirms the University of Auckland’s strong commitment to sustainability and making a positive social impact through our partnerships, research, teaching, operations, community engagement and knowledge transfer,” she said.
The University news says that the “the University of Auckland placed in the world’s top 10 percent in all 17 SDGs of the 1,406 participating universities, with three SDGs in the top 1 percent and a further 10 in the top 5 percent.”
“Top ten scores were achieved in SDG2 Zero Hunger (4th); SDG3 Good Health and Well-being (10th); SDG5 Gender Equality (10th); and SDG15 Life on Land (4th).”
The Impact Rankings 2022 website notes that:
“The overall ranking is led by an Australian institution: Western Sydney University.”
“In second place is the US’s Arizona State University and third is Western University in Canada.”
“No one country dominates the top 10, with universities from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Japan also featuring.”
“The top institutions from an emerging economy are King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and Universiti Sains Malaysia, joint fourth place.”
