The Auckland Council launched the website, “Auckland’s Climate Plan” featuring its long-term climate action approach and priority areas that will deliver emissions reduction and adaptation plans.
In December 2020, the New Zealand government declared a climate emergency. What followed is a path towards net-zero emissions by 2050 to take part in delivering the Paris Agreement to keep temperature rise below 1.5°C.
The Auckland Council also declared a climate emergency in recognition of the impending threats of climate change and how it will impact communities, infrastructure, economy, and natural environment.
The Auckland’s Climate Plan identifies three main climate actions:
- Aucklander’s response that reflects their values and principles and one that is also appropriate for the Māori community,
- Reducing GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and
- Climate Adaptation and preparation based on the potential risks to the city’s infrastructure and residents.
The Auckland’s Climate Plan website also works as a digital platform where users can explore the city’s climate plans and actions on priority areas such as the natural environment, built environment, transport, economy, communities and coast, food, energy and industry, energy and industry, and protection of Maori culture and heritage sites.
