Prof David Levinson, a transport engineering expert and professor at the University of Sydney, says transport infrastructure contributes to and is also affected by climate change.

Aside from the fact that transport infrastructures are vulnerable to extreme climatic events, many transport facilities are below grade, such as those in the New York Subway, severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy, the article says.

Some airports in low-lying coastal areas are also threatened by sea-level rise and pavement damage (Low, 2019, November).

The article also discussed climate change’s impacts on water networks, how to strengthen bridges to survive climate change and the effects of climate change on various landscapes.
